Jutes, Angles and Saxons invaded after the Romans left in AD 410.
Their languages are the basis of modern English.
St Patrick (patron saint of Ireland) and St Columba (who founded a monastery on Iona) spread Christianity from Ireland in the north.
St Augustine led missionaries from Rome in the south and became the first Archbishop of Canterbury.
