Key facts

Commanded the British navy to victory at the Battle of Trafalgar (1805), defeating the combined French and Spanish fleets, but was killed during the battle.
Commemorated by Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, London; his ship HMS Victory can be visited in Portsmouth.
