Key facts

Led Parliament's forces to victory in the Civil War.
Defeated Scottish armies supporting Charles II at the Battles of Dunbar and Worcester (1650–51), leaving Parliament in control of Scotland as well as England and Wales.
Ruled as Lord Protector of the republican Commonwealth until his death in 1658.
Remains a controversial figure in Ireland for the violence of his campaign there.
