If you have moved to the UK from Hong Kong, you may meet the Life in the UK test when you apply for settlement or British citizenship. This page explains what the test is and how to prepare for it.
The questions are based on the official handbook and cover British history, government, law, culture and everyday life. Many topics are new to people who grew up elsewhere, so learning them in small steps helps.
Which is a voluntary role in which members of the public help the police?
Special constable
You can volunteer with the police as a special constable or lay representative.
Why does the Welsh dragon not appear on the Union Flag?
Because Wales was already united with England when the first Union Flag was created
Since Wales was already part of England by this point, it was not given a separate cross or symbol when the flags of Scotland and England were combined.
At which battle in Ireland in 1690 did William III defeat James II?
The Battle of the Boyne
William's victory at the Boyne in 1690 forced James II back to France and remains commemorated by some in Northern Ireland.
Do I need to take the Life in the UK test?
GOV.UK says you may need to take the test as part of an application for British citizenship or settlement in the UK. People under 18 or 65 and over, and some others, do not need to take it. Check GOV.UK for your own route.
How long should I prepare?
That depends on how much of the handbook you already know. Short daily practice sessions over a few weeks work better than cramming the night before.
