The monarchy
King Charles III is the UK's head of state (and head of state for many Commonwealth countries), reigning since his mother Queen Elizabeth II's death in September 2022.
Key facts
- He is married to Queen Camilla; his eldest son, Prince William (Prince of Wales), is heir
- The UK is a "constitutional monarchy": the monarch doesn't rule directly but appoints the government chosen by the public, can advise/warn/encourage the PM, and carries out ceremonial duties (e.g. the annual State Opening of Parliament, where a speech sets out the government's plans; Acts of Parliament are made in his name)
- He also represents the UK abroad and provides continuity as governments change
