Key facts
- Active at election time persuading people to vote (partly by "canvassing" — leafleting or door-knocking; you don't have to say how you'll vote)
- MPs without a party are "independents"; British, Irish and some Commonwealth citizens can stand for office
- Pressure and lobby groups (e.g. the CBI representing business) also try to influence policy
